Centenary Dinner - 1st July 2019

In 1919 the forerunner of the British Section of IESF was founded by British Army engineers who wished to maintain the relationship with their French engineering colleagues that had been built up during the First World War.

On the 100th anniversary, a commemorative dinner was held in London attended by current members of IESF and their guests, including representatives from the French embassy in London and the major engineering and scientific institutions in the UK.

The evening began with the annual Gustave Eiffel lecture given by Humphrey Cadoux-Hudson, Managing Director of Nuclear Development of EDF Energy, on the importance of collaboration and communications in multi-cultural joint engineering projects. Encouraging cohesion in projects such as Hinkley Nuclear Power Station, requires a positive approach by developing and combining the strengths from each culture rather than any weaknesses.

While members and guests had pre-dinner drinks in the Institution of Civil Engineers’ Reception Rooms, twenty Past Presidents of the British Section gathered for a commemorative group photograph. The formal dinner was served to 170 members and guests in the Institution’s Great Hall.

Following the formal dinner, the Sir Alcon Copisarow Medal was presented to Professor Roger Frank by Lady Diana Copisarow. The citation on Professor Frank’s achievements was given by Lord Mair, the British Section’s current Patron.
